Hitachi Rail constructs digital-focussed rail factory in Maryland

Hitachi Rail has opened a digital factory in Maryland, USA, with the new facility featuring more than US$30m (£22m) in digital enhancements.

The facility is designed to supply railcars for customers across North America, including metros in the Washington DC area, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Located in Hagerstown, Maryland, the facility will reportedly sustain 1,300 jobs with up to 460 working directly for Hitachi Rail on site in roles that will harness AI and smart manufacturing principles.

The total added value of the new digital site is set to be more than $350m (£257m) per year, bringing major economic benefits to the DC, Maryland and Virginia regions.

The $100M (£73m) 307,000ft² site, will also include a demonstration of One Hitachi’s technologies via an immersive and interactive customer experience centre.
