Kapsch free-flow tolling systems reach one million daily transactions in Brazil

Kapsch TrafficCom has said its free-flow tolling systems in Brazil are now processing more than one million transactions per day.

The milestone follows the adoption of Kapsch free-flow tolling technology on several Brazilian toll roads, including the country’s first barrier-free tolling system on the BR-101 Rio-Santos Highway. The initial deployment covered a 170km section of BR-101 between Ubatuba in São Paulo state and Itaguaí in Rio de Janeiro state. The system removed traditional toll plazas and barriers, allowing vehicles to maintain speed through the tolling point.

According to Kapsch, the use of payment tags has increased by nearly 70% in two years since the implementation, based on figures from ABEPAM, the Brazilian Association of Automatic Payment Companies for Mobility. The company also said there have been no reported accidents related to toll collection at the free-flow sites.

Kapsch said the introduction of free-flow tolling in Brazil followed several years of work with regulatory agencies and drew on experience from similar systems in markets including Austria, Chile and the USA. Since the first implementation, the company has taken part in free-flow tolling projects on major highways including the Dutra and Sorocabana, as well as state highways in the Serra Gaúcha region operated by concessionaire CSG.

Ramiro Virreira, executive vice president for Latin America at Kapsch TrafficCom, said: “The milestone of million daily transactions is just the beginning of a transformation that promises to make Brazilian roads safer, more efficient, and more connected.” Kapsch TrafficCom also provides traffic management systems in Brazilian cities including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Ribeirão Preto. The company has also delivered technology for the Florianópolis Beltway, including tunnel management systems designed to support safety and traffic flow.
